FAQ About Living in San José del Cabo in 2024: An Expat’s Perspective

I’ve been living in San José del Cabo for quite a few years now, and I can honestly say, there’s no place I’d rather be. Coming from the hustle and bustle of the U.S., settling down in this charming Mexican town has been a breath of fresh air. With its perfect blend of culture, comfort, and a slower pace of life, San José del Cabo offers a lifestyle that’s hard to beat. Here’s what you need to know if you’re considering making the move.

1. What’s the Cost of Living in San José del Cabo?

Living in San José del Cabo, you’ll find that your dollar stretches further without sacrificing luxury. I’ve seen rents here vary widely, from $1,000 to $5,000 USD a month depending on where you choose to live. For example, a place in Palmilla Dunes—one of the most prestigious areas—might be on the higher end, but what you get in return is incomparable: privacy, breathtaking views, and a community that feels both exclusive and welcoming. Compared to the U.S., particularly cities like Los Angeles or New York, the cost of living here feels more manageable while maintaining a high standard of living

2. Is San José del Cabo a Safe Place to Live?

Safety was a significant factor for me when I decided to move here. Los Cabos, and particularly San José del Cabo, is considered one of the safest areas in Mexico. I’ve never felt more secure, even when compared to some U.S. cities. The security here is top-notch, especially in gated communities like Palmilla Dunes, where you can enjoy peace of mind alongside stunning surroundings

3. What Healthcare Options Are Available in San José del Cabo?

Healthcare here is surprisingly excellent. I was initially concerned about this aspect, but after experiencing it firsthand, I can confidently say the medical facilities are world-class. Hospitals like H+ Hospital and BlueNet Hospitals offer a wide range of specialties, and most of the staff speak English, which makes the experience even more comfortable. The cost of healthcare here is also much lower than in the U.S., which is a huge relief

4. How ‘s the Weather in San José del Cabo?

If you’re used to the weather in places like California or Texas, you’ll find the climate here very similar, but with less humidity. The sun shines almost year-round, making it perfect for those who love the outdoors. Yes, the summers can get hot, but nothing that a dip in the ocean or a good air conditioner can’t fix. I actually prefer it to the unpredictability of weather back in the States

5. What Outdoor Activities Can You Do in San José del Cabo?

One of the reasons I moved here was for the incredible outdoor lifestyle. From hiking in Sol de Mayo to exploring the beaches in Los Barriles or spending a weekend in Todos Santos, there’s always something to do. Golfing is big here too, with several world-class courses. And if you’re into more unique activities, the pickleball courts are a favorite among locals and expats alike

6. What’s the Cultural Scene Like in San José del Cabo?

San José del Cabo has a rich cultural tapestry that’s vibrant and ever-changing. The Art Walk is a weekly event that turns the historic center into a hub of creativity, with galleries open late and live music filling the streets. It’s one of those experiences that remind me why I love living here. The art and culture here aren’t just for show; they’re a living, breathing part of the community

7. Where Are the Best Places to Live in San José del Cabo?

While Palmilla Dunes is my personal favorite for its combination of luxury and community, there are other great areas too. Puerto Los Cabos offers stunning marina views, Querencia is perfect for those looking for a private, gated experience, and Campestre San José provides a more laid-back, family-friendly environment. However, Palmilla Dunes truly stands out for its exclusivity and proximity to everything you need

8. Is It Easy to Integrate into the Local Community?

Absolutely. The community here is incredibly welcoming. Whether it’s through neighborhood events in Palmilla Dunes or just striking up a conversation at a local café, you’ll find it easy to make connections. Learning a bit of Spanish has helped me a lot, but even if you don’t, you’ll find plenty of people who speak English and are happy to help you out

9. Are There Good Schools in San José del Cabo?

If you’re moving with a family, you’ll be pleased to know that San José del Cabo has excellent educational options. The Instituto Picacho McGregor is a standout, offering a multicultural, bilingual education that rivals what you’d find in top U.S. private schools. It’s just one of the many reasons why families are choosing to settle here

10. What Should I Know About Buying Property in San José del Cabo?

Buying property here is straightforward once you understand the fideicomiso system, which allows foreigners to own land in coastal areas. This system is both safe and secure, and with the help of a knowledgeable real estate agent, the process is smooth. Whether you’re eyeing a property in Palmilla Dunes or another upscale area, you’ll find the experience transparent and rewarding

Conclusion:

Living in San José del Cabo has been one of the best decisions I’ve made. The combination of safety, luxury, and a welcoming community has made this place feel more like home than anywhere I’ve lived in the U.S. If you’re looking for a change of pace and a place that offers both comfort and adventure, I can’t recommend San José del Cabo enough. It’s not just about the beautiful weather or the incredible food; it’s about the lifestyle and the people who make this place truly special
